As the number of internet users continues to grow around the globe, governments and organizations have expressed concerns about the safety of children and teenagers using the Internet [1]. To spread awareness about online safety, Safer Internet Day is celebrated every February across the world with the aim to create a safe and better internet, where everyone is able to use technology responsibly, respectfully, and creatively.
Safer Internet Day was celebrated for the first time in 2005 as an initiative of the EU-funded SafeBorders project. It was then taken up by Insafe, the network of Safer Internet Centres. Now, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is celebrated in around 200 countries and territories across all continents, reaching millions of people worldwide. This year, on February 8th, we celebrated the 19th edition of this day, with the theme "Together for a better internet".
At Dexterity club, we consider this initiative extremely important and we want to be part of it through a talk, in which we will explain the risks and benefits of daily internet use. We will also share relevant information, ideas, and tips with parents on how to talk to their children about the importance of digital security, as well as the importance of a responsible use of technology.
From cyberbullying to social networking and digital footprint, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns. Let's join forces to reach more people and create a better internet for our new generations!
